Baoen Xuanze

Unknown – c. 960

Baoen Xuanze was a student of Fayan Wenyi who helped spread the Fayan school's teaching during the Five Dynasties period. He is recorded in the transmission literature as one of Fayan's important dharma heirs who carried the school's characteristic emphasis on clarity and direct inquiry into the next generation.

Xuanze maintained a community at Baoen Temple where he taught using the methods he had learned from Fayan—methods that combined the directness of Chan encounter dialogue with the philosophical sophistication of the Huayan and Tiantai traditions. His contribution to the Fayan school helped establish it as a major force in the Chan world of the late tenth century.
