Fengxian Daochen

Unknown – c. 988

Fengxian Daochen was a Yunmen school master who maintained the tradition's teaching methods. He is recorded in the lamp literature as a teacher who employed the Yunmen style of direct, compressed expression to point students toward awakening.

Daochen's teaching continued the Yunmen tradition of using language as a precision instrument—each word chosen for maximum impact, each phrase designed to cut through the student's conceptual mind and reveal the immediate truth beneath. This linguistic virtuosity was the Yunmen school's distinctive gift to the broader Chan tradition.
