Lianhua Fengxiang
Lianhua Fengxiang
Unknown – c. 927
Lianhua Fengxiang was a Yunmen school master whose name means "Lotus Peak." He is recorded in the transmission literature as a teacher who maintained the Yunmen tradition's methods of direct pointing through compressed verbal expression.
Fengxiang's place in the Yunmen lineage represents the tradition's contribution to the broader development of Chan practice. Though the Yunmen school eventually merged with other lineages, its methods and insights—particularly its approach to language as a vehicle for awakening—were absorbed into the mainstream of Chan and continue to influence koan practice today.
