Guiyang

Jiufeng Qin

Dates uncertain

Jiufeng Qin was a Guiyang school master who taught at Mount Jiufeng. He is recorded in the transmission literature as a dharma heir who maintained the Guiyang tradition's emphasis on the subtle and non-verbal dimensions of Chan teaching. His encounters with students, preserved in the lamp records, reflect the school's refined approach.

The Guiyang school, though it eventually merged with other lineages and did not survive as a separate institution beyond the Song dynasty, left a lasting mark on the broader Chan tradition through its emphasis on gestural communication and the symbolic representation of awakened understanding. Teachers like Jiufeng Qin carried this legacy forward during the school's period of active transmission.

A monk asked Jiufeng, "What is the meaning of the master's silent sitting?" Jiufeng said, "When have I ever sat silently?" The monk said, "You have been sitting here without speaking all morning." Jiufeng said, "Not speaking is not the same as silence. The whole universe is speaking right now. Can't you hear it?"
