Liu Tiemo, "Iron Grinder Liu," was one of the most formidable female Chan practitioners, known for her skill in dharma combat that could grind to dust any male opponent's understanding—hence her nickname. She was a contemporary of Guishan Lingyou and engaged him in famous exchanges that demonstrate her profound realization.
In one celebrated encounter, Guishan asked her, "You are an Iron Grinder, after all?" She replied, "Yes." Guishan asked, "Can you grind with a millstone, or only with words?" She responded, "Turn yourself into a ball of flour, and I'll show you." This exchange reveals a practitioner of such confidence and clarity that she could meet one of the greatest masters of the age on completely equal terms. Iron Grinder Liu represents the women who achieved deep awakening within the Chan tradition despite the patriarchal structures that often rendered them invisible.
