Nanyue Daoxuan

596 – 667

Nanyue Daoxuan (南嶽道宣, fl. mid-9th c.) is recorded in the *Jǐngdé Chuándēng Lù* as a Chan teacher of the Nanyue / Shitou region in modern Hunan — distinct from the much earlier Tang Vinaya master Daoxuan (596–667) who founded the Nanshan Vinaya school[1]. Beyond his placement among the second- or third-generation Shitou-line teachers, the surviving record preserves little of his individual story; he is one of the many figures who anchored the regional Chan network that radiated outward from Mount Nanyue through the late Tang[2].
