Thích Thiện Hoa

1918 – 1973

Thích Thiện Hoa (1918–1973) was a leading Vietnamese Lâm Tế master of the twentieth century and the root ordination teacher (bổn sư) of Thích Thanh Từ, who later revived the Trúc Lâm Zen school[1]. He ordained Thích Thanh Từ at Phật Quang Pagoda on 15 July 1949, giving him the dharma name Thanh Tư[1]. As a Pure Land practitioner within the Lâm Tế tradition, his lineage anchors the southern Vietnamese Buddhist current from which Thích Thanh Từ eventually departed to revive the indigenous Trúc Lâm practice.
