Yunmen

Yuantong Fashen

Unknown – c. 1024

Yuantong Fashen was a Yunmen school master who served in the tradition during the Song dynasty. He maintained the school's practices and contributed to the Yunmen lineage's ongoing vitality during its later period of activity.

Fashen's contribution to the tradition lies in the preservation of the Yunmen methods during a period when the school was being gradually absorbed into the dominant Linji tradition. The integration of Yunmen's linguistic and pedagogical insights into the broader Chan mainstream ensured that the school's distinctive contributions were not lost.
