Dongshan Shouchu went to visit Fayan Wenyi. Fayan asked, "Where have you come from?" Dongshan said, "From Touzi." Fayan said, "What is Touzi's essential teaching?" Dongshan said, "Three pounds of hemp." Fayan said, "That's your essential teaching—what is mine?" Dongshan said, "I don't know." Fayan said, "Good. You have saved yourself a question."
