Baoci Xingyan

Unknown – c. 892

Baoci Xingyan was a master in the Qingyuan tradition who taught at Baoci Temple. He is recorded in the Jingde Chuandenglu as a dharma heir who maintained the tradition of direct pointing through encounters with visiting monks. His exchanges reflect the late Tang and Five Dynasties period, when Chan communities were consolidating their identity through the systematic collection and study of encounter dialogues.

Though his individual contributions are less celebrated than those of the school founders, Baoci represents the crucial work of lineage maintenance—teachers who faithfully transmitted the living quality of the tradition without necessarily generating the dramatic encounters that became famous koans. The continuity of the Dharma depends as much on these faithful transmitters as on the legendary innovators.
