Baofeng Weizhao
Baofeng Weizhao
Unknown – c. 1129
Baofeng Weizhao was a Guiyang school master who taught at Mount Baofeng. He is recorded in the transmission literature as a dharma heir who maintained the Guiyang school's distinctive teaching methods, which emphasized the use of circular figures and subtle gestures to communicate the unity of the absolute and relative.
The Guiyang school, the earliest of the Five Houses of Chan, was known for its refined and indirect teaching style. Unlike the dramatic shouts and blows of the Linji school, the Guiyang approach used symbols, circles, and wordless communication to point to the truth. Baofeng's teaching continued this tradition of elegant subtlety, contributing to the school's reputation as the most artistically refined of the Chan houses.

Baofeng said: "If you take a single step forward, you stumble over your own feet. If you take a single step back, you fall into the pit of concepts. If you stand still, you are a dead stump. Tell me—where will you plant your feet?"
