Qingyuan line

Chongshou Qichou

Dates uncertain

Chongshou Qichou was a Chan master in the Qingyuan lineage who taught during the Five Dynasties period. His name is associated with a monastery where he trained students in the methods of the Qingyuan tradition, emphasizing direct experience over doctrinal elaboration. The transmission records preserve his lineage connections, documenting his place in the unbroken chain from Qingyuan Xingsi through subsequent generations.

The many lesser-known masters preserved in the lamp records served an essential function: they were the capillaries through which the lifeblood of Chan circulated beyond the famous centers and great masters, reaching small communities and remote regions and ensuring that the tradition remained vital and broadly accessible.
