Daisetsu Joen

1797 – 1855

Daisetsu Jōen (1797–1855) was a student of Taigen Shigen in the Inzan line of post-Hakuin Rinzai Zen. He carried forward the Inzan koan curriculum and trained students who extended the lineage into subsequent generations. His dharma heir Ogino Dokuen continued the transmission, which eventually reached Joshu Sasaki in the twentieth century.

Though Daisetsu Jōen is not widely known outside the Rinzai lineage records, his position in the chain of transmission makes him a structurally important figure in the spread of Rinzai Zen to America.
