Rinzai

Ogino Dokuen

1819 – 1895

Ogino Dokuen (1819–1895) was a Rinzai master in the Inzan line, a student of Daisetsu Jōen. He served as a bridge figure in the transmission of the Inzan koan curriculum through the turbulent Meiji period, when Buddhism faced serious challenges from the new government's promotion of Shinto and its separation edicts.

His student Banryō Zensō carried the lineage forward, eventually leading to Jōten Sōkō Miura and, through him, to Joshu Sasaki's transplantation of Rinzai Zen to America.
