Dokutan Sosan

1840 – 1917

Dokutan Sosan was a Rinzai Zen master who contributed to the tradition's development in the Edo period. He maintained the school's emphasis on koan practice and the cultivation of genuine insight through the rigorous training methods established by Hakuin and his successors.

Sosan's teaching reflected the mature form of post-Hakuin Rinzai Zen, which systematized koan practice into a comprehensive curriculum designed to lead the student through progressively deeper layers of understanding. This curriculum, refined over many generations, remains the standard framework for Rinzai training today.
