Tankai Gensho
Tankai Gensho
1811 – 1898
Tankai Gensho was a Rinzai Zen master who served in the school's transmission lineage. He contributed to the maintenance of the Rinzai tradition's practices and the training of monks in the methods established by Hakuin and his successors.
Gensho's role in the Rinzai lineage reflects the tradition's emphasis on the personal encounter between teacher and student as the irreplaceable vehicle for transmitting genuine understanding. The Rinzai school holds that no text, technique, or institution can substitute for this living encounter.
