Rinzai

Karyo Zuika

1790 – 1859

Karyo Zuika was a Rinzai Zen master who served in the school's transmission lineage. He contributed to the maintenance of the Rinzai tradition's practices and the training of monks in the koan curriculum developed by Hakuin and his successors.

Zuika's role in the Rinzai lineage reflects the tradition's organic development across the centuries. While maintaining the essential framework of Hakuin's koan practice, each generation of Rinzai teachers has brought their own insight and experience to the tradition, keeping it vital and responsive to changing circumstances.
