Longya asked Cuiwei, "What is the meaning of the patriarch's coming from the West?" Cuiwei said, "Pass me that meditation cushion." As Longya handed it over, Cuiwei took it and hit him with it. Longya said, "You may hit me as you wish. In the end, there is no meaning of the patriarch's coming from the West." Later Longya asked Linji the same question. Linji said, "Pass me that meditation cushion." As Longya handed it over, Linji took it and hit him. Longya said, "You may hit me as you wish. In the end, there is no meaning of the patriarch's coming from the West." Linji said, "That is so."
- sayingTending the Fire
Longya said to the assembly: "Those who study the Way must first learn to tend the fire. What fire? The fire of delusion that burns day and night. If you try to extinguish it, you only fan the flames. If you let it burn freely, it consumes itself. When the fuel is spent, what remains?"
