Longya Judun

c. 835 – c. 923

Longya Judun was a Yunmen school master who is known for his exchange with Cuiwei Wuxue about the meaning of Bodhidharma's coming from the West. When Longya asked this question, Cuiwei said, "Pass me the meditation brace." When Longya handed it to him, Cuiwei struck him. Longya said, "If you want to hit me, go ahead, but the meaning of the coming from the West has not been expressed."

Longya then visited Linji Yixuan with the same question. Linji said, "Pass me the cushion." When Longya handed it to him, Linji also struck him. Longya again said, "If you want to hit me, go ahead, but the meaning has not been expressed." These encounters became important koan material exploring whether the blow itself is the answer or whether something else entirely is being pointed to.

    (traditional attribution)

Longya said to the assembly: "Those who study the Way must first learn to tend the fire. What fire? The fire of delusion that burns day and night. If you try to extinguish it, you only fan the flames. If you let it burn freely, it consumes itself. When the fuel is spent, what remains?"
