Luoshan Daoxian

Unknown – c. 898

Luoshan Daoxian was a figure in the Qingyuan tradition whose dialogues appear in the transmission of the lamp records. He is associated with Mount Luo, where he maintained a modest community of practitioners. His exchanges with visiting monks reflect the typical Tang dynasty Chan style of provocative questioning and unexpected response.

Luoshan's recorded encounters include moments of characteristically abrupt Chan instruction: pushing a monk, pointing at the sky, or answering a philosophical question with a practical direction. Like many masters of his generation, he understood that awakening cannot be transmitted through explanation but must be precipitated through a break in the habitual stream of conceptual thought.
