Qingyuan line

Qingxi Hongjin

Dates uncertain

Qingxi Hongjin was a Chan master of the Qingyuan lineage who maintained a practice center at Qingxi. He is documented in the lamp transmission records as a dharma heir who carried forward the teaching style of his lineage. His recorded encounters, while brief, show a teacher grounded in the direct and experiential approach that characterized the Qingyuan tradition.

Hongjin's role in the lineage reflects the organic growth of Chan Buddhism during the Tang and Five Dynasties periods, when the tradition spread through personal transmission from teacher to student across a wide network of monasteries and hermitages. Each master in this network served as both custodian and living embodiment of the teaching.
