Qingyuan line

Taiyuan Fu

Dates uncertain

Taiyuan Fu was a Chan master in the Qingyuan lineage who taught in the Taiyuan region. He is documented in the transmission records as a dharma heir who contributed to the spread of Qingyuan line Chan in northern China. His teaching continued the lineage emphasis on direct experience and encounter-based instruction.

Taiyuan's presence in the lamp records is significant for showing the geographical reach of the Qingyuan tradition, which extended far beyond its origins in the south. Masters who carried the teaching to northern regions helped ensure that Chan Buddhism became a truly national phenomenon rather than remaining a regional tradition confined to the Jiangxi-Fujian area where many of its greatest masters had taught.
