Takuju Kosen

1760 – 1833

Takuju Kosen was a Rinzai Zen master of the Edo period who developed an approach to koan practice that became one of the two main currents in post-Hakuin Rinzai Zen, alongside the Inzan line. The Takuju line, while less dominant than the Inzan line, contributed important insights into the methodology of koan training and maintained a distinctive teaching style.

Kosen's approach to koan practice placed particular emphasis on the quality of the student's understanding and the thoroughness of their realization. His lineage through subsequent generations maintained this emphasis on depth over speed, creating a tradition of careful, penetrating koan study that complemented the more vigorous approach of the Inzan school.
