Lâm Tế

Tế An Lưu Quang

Dates uncertain

Tế An Lưu Quang was the second-generation master of the Liễu Quán dharma line and the thirty-sixth generation of the Linji (Lâm Tế) school. He served as abbot of Bảo Quốc Temple in Huế, continuing the transmission that Liễu Quán had established. The character "Tế" in his name corresponds to the second position in Liễu Quán's dharma transmission poem, the gatha that assigns a unique character to each generation's dharma names — a system still used to name monastics in the tradition today.

Little biographical detail has survived in available sources about Tế An Lưu Quang's personal life or teaching. His significance lies in his faithful preservation of the Liễu Quán transmission during the critical early generations when the distinctly Vietnamese form of Lâm Tế Buddhism was taking root. He transmitted the dharma to Đại Tuệ Chiếu Nhiên, maintaining the unbroken lineage that would eventually flow through Từ Hiếu Temple to Thích Nhất Hạnh and the global Plum Village tradition.
