Tekisui Giboku

1822 – 1899

Tekisui Giboku (1822–1899) was a student of Gisan Zenrai and a Rinzai master whose lineage eventually produced Omori Sogen, one of the most celebrated twentieth-century Rinzai teachers. Tekisui trained during the final decades of the Tokugawa period and into the Meiji era, a time of profound social transformation that tested the resilience of Zen institutions.

Through his student Ryoen Genseki and subsequent generations, Tekisui's transmission reached into the twentieth century and beyond, contributing to the internationalization of Rinzai Zen through Omori Sogen's founding of Chozen-ji in Honolulu.
