Qingyuan line

Yungai Zhiyuan

Dates uncertain

Yungai Zhiyuan was a Chan master of the Qingyuan lineage who taught at Yungai Temple. He is recorded in the Jingde Chuandenglu as a dharma heir within the Qingyuan line. His teaching maintained the tradition's emphasis on direct pointing and encounter-based instruction, carrying the Dharma forward through personal transmission.

The Yungai community under Zhiyuan's guidance contributed to the broader network of practice centers through which Chan Buddhism sustained itself during the late Tang and Five Dynasties periods. Each temple and hermitage in this network served as a node in the living web of transmission, keeping the Dharma accessible and vital across the changing landscape of medieval Chinese society.
