Yangqi line

Zhangjing Huaiyun

Unknown – c. 880

Zhangjing Huaiyun was a Yangqi line master recorded in the transmission literature who maintained the tradition's teaching methods during the Song dynasty. He taught at Zhangjing Temple and trained students in the encounter-based practice that characterized the Yangqi branch. His dialogues, preserved in the lamp records, reflect the standard of rigor maintained across the Yangqi network.

Huaiyun's contribution to the tradition lies in the faithful maintenance of the Yangqi lineage's teaching quality. The branch's eventual dominance within Chinese Chan was built on the accumulated efforts of teachers like Huaiyun, each of whom ensured that the transmission remained living and vital rather than degenerating into mere institutional affiliation.
