Text

Daowu and Jianyuan went to a house to express condolences. Jianyuan struck the coffin and said, "Alive or dead?" Daowu said, "I won't say alive, I won't say dead." Jianyuan said, "Why won't you say?" Daowu said, "I won't say, I won't say." On the way back, Jianyuan said, "Please tell me right now, Teacher. If you don't tell me, I'll hit you." Daowu said, "You can hit me if you like, but I still won't say." Jianyuan struck him. Later, after Daowu had passed away, Jianyuan went to Shishuang and asked about the same matter. Shishuang said, "I won't say alive, I won't say dead." At these words Jianyuan was awakened.
