Linji

Huguo Jingyuan

Dates uncertain

Huguo Jingyuan was a Linji school master who served as abbot of Huguo Temple, a position that brought with it considerable institutional responsibility. He was known for his ability to manage the practical affairs of a large monastery while maintaining the intensity of his own practice and teaching. His dialogues with monks reflect the mature Song dynasty Linji tradition, balancing spontaneity with institutional stability.

Jingyuan's contribution lies in demonstrating that the wild energy of the Linji tradition could be channeled within the structure of monastic institutions without losing its transformative power. He trained students who went on to lead their own communities, extending the reach of Linji Chan across the Song dynasty Buddhist world.
