Huanglong Huinan

Huanglong Huinan
1002 – 1069
Huanglong Huinan was a student of Shishuang Chuyuan who founded the Huanglong branch of the Linji school, one of the two great subschools into which Linji Chan divided during the Song dynasty. He taught at Mount Huanglong and developed a systematic approach to testing students known as the "Three Barriers of Huanglong."
The Three Barriers were questions that Huanglong posed to every student: "Everyone has a place of birth—where is your place of birth?" "My hand is like the hand of Buddha—what is the reason?" "My foot is like the foot of a donkey—what is the meaning?" These seemingly absurd questions were designed to probe whether the student had genuine realization or merely intellectual understanding. The Huanglong branch flourished for several generations and was particularly influential in the transmission of Chan to Korea and Japan, where its methods continued to shape Zen practice.

Huanglong asked every student who came to him three questions: "Everyone has a place of birth—where is your place of birth?" "My hand is like the hand of Buddha—what is the hidden meaning?" "My foot is like the foot of a donkey—what is the secret?" No student could answer all three. Huanglong said, "If you cannot pass through these three barriers, your practice is like a tree without roots, your sitting is like water poured on stone."
