Huitang Zuxin

c. 1025 – c. 1100

Huitang Zuxin was a student of Huanglong Huinan and one of the most prominent masters of the Huanglong branch. He was known for the depth and precision of his teaching and for his literary accomplishments—he was an accomplished poet whose verses on Chan themes are among the finest of the Song dynasty. His teaching combined the systematic rigor of the Huanglong approach with a spontaneous creativity.

Huitang maintained a large community and trained many students who carried the Huanglong tradition forward. His exchanges with students demonstrate the mature form of the Huanglong teaching method—structured enough to give the student a clear path of inquiry, yet flexible enough to respond to the unique character and capacity of each individual practitioner.
