Linji

Juefan Huihong

c. 1071 – c. 1128

Juefan Huihong was a Linji school monk who was also one of the most accomplished Buddhist literary figures of the Song dynasty. He was a student of the Chan tradition who brought exceptional scholarly and literary gifts to his practice, producing works of criticism, history, and commentary that helped shape how later generations understood the Chan heritage. His literary output bridges the gap between the encounter dialogue tradition and formal Buddhist scholarship.

Huihong's most significant contribution was his literary advocacy for the Linji tradition. He argued that the spontaneity and directness of Chan did not preclude literary refinement, and that the tradition's encounter dialogues were themselves a form of literature—one that demanded the same careful attention as any classical text. His work helped establish the literary study of koans as a legitimate aspect of Chan practice.
