Linji

Tongfeng Anzhu

Dates uncertain

Tongfeng Anzhu was a Linji school master who is recorded in the transmission of the lamp literature. He maintained a practice community and contributed to the Linji tradition's broad network of monasteries during the Song dynasty. His teaching continued the school's characteristic emphasis on breakthrough experiences precipitated by the encounter between teacher and student.

Like many masters of his generation, Tongfeng sustained the living tradition through personal transmission rather than literary production. The Linji school's strength lay not in any text or doctrine but in the quality of its practitioners and the intensity of its teacher-student encounters. Each master in the lineage, including those less well known to later history, served as a living link in this chain of transmitted realization.
