Linji

Yuelin Shiguan

c. 1143 – c. 1217

Yuelin Shiguan was a Linji school master of the Song dynasty who taught with the characteristically direct methods of the tradition. He is recorded in the transmission literature as a dharma heir who maintained the quality of Linji practice during the school's period of dominance in Chinese Buddhism.

Shiguan's recorded encounters demonstrate the standard of rigor that the Linji school maintained through its many generations of teachers. The tradition's insistence on authentic personal realization—not mere intellectual understanding or behavioral conformity—created a demanding environment in which only those who had genuinely broken through the barrier of conceptual mind were recognized as dharma heirs.
