Linji

Yunan Kewen

Dates uncertain

Yunan Kewen was a Linji school master who taught at Yunan Temple during the Song dynasty. He was known for a teaching approach that emphasized the investigation of the mind's fundamental nature through the practice of encounter dialogue. His community maintained the rigorous training methods that characterized the Linji school.

Kewen's contribution, like that of many Song dynasty masters, lay in sustaining the tradition's emphasis on direct experience during a period when Chan was becoming increasingly institutionalized. The tension between institutional stability and experiential immediacy was a defining challenge for the Song dynasty Chan schools, and masters like Kewen navigated it by maintaining the intensity of the encounter even within established monastic structures.
