Yangqi line

Zhuan Shigui

Dates uncertain

Zhuan Shigui was a Yangqi line master who is recorded in the transmission of the lamp records as a dharma heir within the Yangqi branch of the Linji school. He maintained a practice community and contributed to the lineage's broad reach during the Song dynasty.

The Yangqi branch's success in becoming the dominant form of Chinese Chan depended on the accumulated efforts of many teachers, each maintaining the standard of authentic transmission from teacher to student. Zhuan Shigui represents this essential work of lineage maintenance—the steady, persistent effort to ensure that the flame of awakening continues to be passed forward without diminution.
