Caodong

Changshui Zixuan

c. 965 – c. 1038

Changshui Zixuan was a Caodong school master and one of the most accomplished Buddhist scholars of the Song dynasty. He was known for his commentaries on the Shurangama Sutra and other key Buddhist texts, bringing the Caodong tradition's contemplative insight to bear on textual interpretation. His work bridged the worlds of Chan practice and Buddhist scholarship.

Zixuan's scholarly accomplishments remind us that the Caodong school, despite its emphasis on sitting meditation, never rejected the study of Buddhist texts. The school's characteristic approach was to read scripture through the lens of meditative experience, finding in the philosophical traditions of Buddhism a confirmation and elaboration of what the practitioner discovers in silent sitting.
