Butsumon Sogaku

1858 – 1933

Butsumon Sogaku was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the school's spiritual and institutional development. He maintained the tradition's contemplative practices and trained students in the methods established by Dogen and refined through subsequent generations of Japanese Soto teachers.

Sogaku's teaching reflected the Soto school's mature integration of zazen practice with the broader framework of Buddhist thought and practice. His role in the lineage helped ensure the continuity of the tradition during his period of activity.
