Gukei Youn

Dates uncertain

Gukei Youn was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the tradition's continuity in Japan. He maintained the school's emphasis on zazen practice and the integration of meditation with monastic discipline as established by Dogen and refined by subsequent generations of teachers.

Youn's teaching reflected the mature form of Japanese Soto Zen, which balanced the radical simplicity of Dogen's shikantaza with the institutional needs of a large Buddhist denomination. This balance—between contemplative depth and organizational structure—has been the central challenge of the Soto school throughout its history.
