Kankai Tokuon
Dates uncertain
Kankai Tokuon was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the tradition's institutional and spiritual life. He maintained the school's practices of zazen and dharma transmission, training students in the methods established by Dogen.
Tokuon's role in the Soto succession reflects the tradition's emphasis on the continuity of practice. The Soto school teaches that each generation of practitioners has access to the same awakening that Dogen experienced, provided the practice is maintained with sincerity and transmitted with integrity.
