Sessan Tetsuzen
Sessan Tetsuzen
Dates uncertain
Sessan Tetsuzen was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the tradition's spiritual and institutional life. He maintained the school's practices and served as a link in the chain of transmission that stretches from Dogen to the present.
Tetsuzen's teaching continued the Soto emphasis on zazen as the foundation and fullest expression of Buddhist practice. The tradition's conviction that sitting in meditation is itself the actualization of enlightenment—not a means to it—was preserved and transmitted by teachers like Tetsuzen across the generations.
