Shoun Hozui

Shoun Hozui was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the tradition's continuity in Japan. He maintained the school's practices and served as a link in the lineage connecting early Soto patriarchs to later generations.

Hozui's role in the Soto lineage reflects the tradition's emphasis on unbroken transmission. Each teacher in the Soto succession bears the weight of the entire lineage—the accumulated practice and realization of all who came before—and passes it forward to those who follow.
