Shugan Dochin
Shugan Dochin
Unknown – 1387
Shugan Dochin was a Soto Zen master who served in the transmission lineage of the school. He contributed to the training of practitioners and the maintenance of the tradition's institutional and contemplative life. His teaching continued the Soto emphasis on zazen as the essential practice.
Dochin's role in the lineage demonstrates the Soto school's characteristic stability and continuity. While other traditions experienced dramatic cycles of decline and revival, the Soto school maintained a relatively steady course, sustained by the regular practice of zazen and the faithful transmission of the Dharma from teacher to student.
