Tongan Guanzhi

Unknown – c. 961

Tongan Guanzhi was a student of Tongan Daopi who continued the Caodong transmission at Tongan Temple. He maintained the school's characteristic emphasis on silent sitting and the integration of the absolute and relative as expressed through Dongshan's Five Ranks. His teaching preserved the Caodong approach during a transitional period.

Guanzhi's lineage is significant because it carries the Caodong transmission forward to Liangshan Yuanguan and eventually to the great revivalists who would restore the school to prominence. The unbroken chain through these relatively obscure figures demonstrates the tradition's resilience—its ability to survive periods of institutional weakness through the quality of individual teacher-student relationships.
