Tongan Daopi

Unknown – c. 985

Tongan Daopi was an important figure in the Caodong lineage who helped maintain the school's transmission during a period when it was less prominent than the Linji school. He taught at Tongan Temple and emphasized the quiet, contemplative approach that characterized the Caodong tradition. His principal teaching focused on the unity of practice and enlightenment.

Tongan Daopi's contribution was primarily one of faithful transmission—keeping the Caodong flame burning during a period when the school lacked the institutional prominence of the Linji tradition. His lineage through Tongan Guanzhi and subsequent masters eventually led to the great revival of the Caodong school under Furong Daokai and Hongzhi Zhengjue.
