Ungai Kozan was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the tradition's institutional and spiritual life in Japan. He maintained the school's emphasis on zazen as the foundation of Buddhist practice and served as a teacher within the Soto framework.

Kozan's place in the Soto lineage represents the tradition's ongoing adaptation and growth. While maintaining fidelity to Dogen's essential teaching, each generation of Soto teachers has contributed to the school's capacity to serve new communities of practitioners.
