Caodong

Yangshan Yong

Dates uncertain

Yangshan Yong was a Caodong school master who taught at Mount Yangshan. His name associates him with the mountain made famous by Yangshan Huiji of the Guiyang school, and his teaching maintained the contemplative traditions of the Caodong lineage in this historically significant location.

Yong's presence at Yangshan represents the organic way in which Chan schools coexisted and overlapped in Song dynasty China. A Caodong master teaching at a site associated with the Guiyang tradition exemplifies the fluidity of the Chan world, in which the boundaries between schools were more porous than sectarian rhetoric suggested.
