Daishin Kan'yu was a Soto Zen master who maintained the tradition's transmission in Japan. He contributed to the school's continuity by preserving the practice of zazen and dharma transmission within the Soto institutional framework.
Kan'yu's place in the Soto lineage reflects the tradition's emphasis on the unbroken chain of transmission as the foundation of authentic practice. Each teacher in the Soto succession carries the accumulated wisdom and practice of all previous generations, passing it forward through the personal encounter with students.
