Fuden Gentotsu

Dates uncertain

Fuden Gentotsu was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the tradition's continuity in Japan. He maintained the school's contemplative practices and institutional structures, serving as a link in the lineage stretching from Dogen to the present day.

Gentotsu's teaching continued the Soto emphasis on zazen as the essential practice. The school's tradition of grounding everything in seated meditation—seeing zazen not as one practice among many but as the foundation of all practice—was preserved and transmitted by teachers like Gentotsu across the generations.
