Hōzan Kōei Chino

Dates uncertain

Hōzan Kōei Chino (知野弘恵) was a Japanese Sōtō priest and head of Jōkō-ji in Kamo (Niigata Prefecture). He is the adoptive father and Dharma-transmission teacher of Kōbun Chino Otogawa, who was raised at Jōkō-ji after his birth father's death and received Dharma transmission (shihō) from Hōzan Kōei in 1962[1][2]. Kōbun went on to become one of the most influential Japanese Sōtō teachers in the postwar American transmission, founding Hōkō-ji (Taos, NM) and Jikoji (Santa Cruz Mountains), and an early teacher to Steve Jobs. The Eihei-ji training Kōbun undertook in his twenties under Kōdō Sawaki was a practice / onshi training, distinct from the shihō relationship with his adoptive father Hōzan Kōei[1].
