Dates uncertain
Kaiten Genju was a Soto Zen master who contributed to the school's intellectual life. He was part of the tradition of Soto scholar-monks who combined meditative practice with the study of Dogen's writings, helping to clarify and systematize the founder's often difficult philosophical works for subsequent generations of practitioners.
Genju's scholarly contributions reflect an important dimension of the Soto school—its commitment to understanding and interpreting Dogen's Shobogenzo, one of the most profound and challenging works in world religious literature. The tradition of Dogen scholarship within the Soto school has produced a rich body of commentary that continues to illuminate the founder's thought.
